Mad Honey
Where does Mad Honey come from?
Mad honey is found in Nepal and Turkey and is known for its medicinal and psychoactive properties that contains grayanotoxins. The dark, reddish honey is produced from the nectar and pollen of genus Rhododendron and has moderately toxic and narcotic effects. Mad honey is produced by the Himalayan giant honey bees (Apis laboriosa) where it is used both as a traditional medicine and a recreational drug.

How is Mad Honey harvested?
Traditional Nepalese honey hunters scale 300-foot cliffs using handmade rope ladders and bamboo poles. Harvesters create smoke fires below hives to calm aggressive bees, then cut honeycomb sections. This dangerous practice occurs twice yearly (spring/autumn). Turkish harvesting uses conventional beekeeping near rhododendron forests. Single expeditions yield 60-80kg of honey.

Why do the color and texture of Mad Honey vary?
Mad honey's color and texture vary primarily due to the floral source (like Rhododendron), which dictates nectar compounds, but also by geography, season, and processing, influencing its tint (light to dark), fluidity (runny to thick), and even its intoxicating effects from grayanotoxins, making each batch unique.

Is there anything added to your Medicinal Mad Honey?
No. Medicinal Mad Honey is 100% pure and natural. Nothing is added, mixed, or enhanced. It is harvested traditionally from wild Himalayan cliffs and contains only naturally occurring compounds from the nectar of native rhododendron flowers. There are no additives, preservatives, sugars, or chemicals—just raw, unprocessed mad honey as it exists in nature.

How long will a jar of Mad Honey last?
A jar of pure mad honey, like regular honey, will last indefinitely when stored properly because its low moisture content and high acidity prevent microbial growth. The grayanotoxins that make it "mad" remain chemically stable and retain their potency for months or even years.
However, manufacturers often apply a "best by" date of one to three years for quality assurance and legal reasons, not because the product becomes unsafe.

Can people with diabetes take Mad Honey?
No, diabetics should avoid mad honey. Like regular honey, it contains high sugar content (glucose/fructose) that raises blood glucose levels. Additionally, grayanotoxins affect cardiovascular function, potentially dangerous for diabetics with existing circulation or heart issues. No research supports safe diabetic consumption. The glycemic impact combined with neurotoxic effects creates unacceptable risks.

Can children take Mad Honey?
No, children should never consume mad honey. Grayanotoxins pose serious health risks to developing nervous and cardiovascular systems. Children are more susceptible to neurotoxic effects at lower doses. Traditional cultures restrict mad honey to adults only. Even regular honey isn't recommended for infants under 12 months due to botulism risk.

Can Mad Honey be taken during pregnancy?
No, mad honey should not be taken during pregnancy due to its high concentration of grayanotoxins, which can cause serious issues like low blood pressure (hypotension) and slow heart rate (bradycardia) for both mother and baby, despite regular honey being generally safe and beneficial. Medical literature documents cases of mad honey intoxication in pregnant women, showing potential complications, so consulting a doctor is crucial before consuming any unique honey, especially one known for hallucinogenic or toxic effects like mad honey.

Which mad honey is best for me to buy?
The best mad honey for you is generally raw, local, and unfiltered honey, as it retains beneficial enzymes, pollen, and antioxidants, but the "best" depends on your goal—for health, choose raw/local; for smooth, clear liquid, a filtered, pasteurized one works, while Medicinal Mad Honey offers specific antibacterial benefits, and always check for a single ingredient (just honey).

Why is it called Mad Honey?
It's called "Mad Honey" because it contains naturally occurring toxins called grayanotoxins, found in the nectar of certain rhododendron species, which can cause mild to severe hallucinogenic, intoxicating, or even poisonous effects like dizziness, nausea, heart rhythm issues, and temporary paralysis, making people feel "mad" or disoriented.

What makes Mad Honey different from regular honey?
Mad honey contains grayanotoxins producing psychoactive and cardiovascular effects absent in regular honey. It comes exclusively from rhododendron-feeding bees in specific geographic regions. Regular honey lacks neurotoxic compounds. Mad honey requires careful dosing; regular honey can be consumed freely. Appearance, taste (more bitter), and price differ significantly.

How do you use Mad Honey?
Traditional uses include consuming 1/4-1 teaspoon directly on an empty stomach, dissolving in warm (not hot) water or tea, or spreading on bread. Avoid heating above 95°F to preserve active compounds. Take morning or early afternoon, never before sleep. Start with minimal doses and wait 2+ hours before increasing. Don't mix with alcohol or medications.

Mad Honey Soap
What is your soap packaged in?
Recycled paper, plastic wrap and cardboard. We have chosen these materials as it keeps your soaps free from contact and other contaminants whilst awaiting purchase and can decompose leaving no mark on our beautiful planet.
I'm confused, I thought your soaps were natural but they contain things such as oils, why is this?
Our current soaps are entirely natural. They are, for the most part, derived from vegetables and we use natural colours and scents.
Are your soaps suitable for young children?
All of our soaps are human tested. We are advised they should be avoided for children under the age of 7.
Can I use the soap on my face?
Yes, but please avoid contact with eyes or mouth. If you do accidentally get it in your eyes or mouth please rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Why does my soap have imperfections? Why doesn’t it look exactly like the photo?
Our soaps are handcrafted in small batches and cut by hand and therefore no two bars will be alike. Various uncontrolled factors affect how saponification takes place and hence soaps vary from batch to batch as do designs. These are artisanal products so please allow for slight variations and imperfections, these make each bar unique and that’s what we love about it.

Do you take custom or bulk orders?
Yes, we do! Mad Honey is available in stock throughout the year. However, please note that cold process soaps and lip balms take 4-6 weeks to cure. So if you’d like to place a custom order, we would need to finalize the design, fragrance, etc., at least one month in advance to be able to give you your finished product in time.
For bulk orders as well, unless we do have stock available, you might need to place your order with us at least 3 weeks in advance.
How do you collaborate with honey hunters?
We work with over 84 honey-hunting communities in Nepal to source the finest mad honey and beeswax. We are collaboratively working with the government and honey hunters to save the Himalayan giant bees and hives every year through our social initiatives.
Are your honey jars glass or plastic?
Our premium mad honey jars are made from 100% recycled plastic (rPET), which is food-safe and BPA-free. After extensive research, we found that recycled plastics are more environmentally friendly than glass from a lifecycle perspective, making them the better choice for sustainability.
For our limited reserve jars, we use glass, which preserves the honey's purity and potency over an extended period. All our jars, whether plastic or glass, are fully recycled and 100% recyclable. By ensuring your jar ends up in the recycling bin, you are contributing to a more sustainable future.
