Mad Honey Hunting Tour
Mad Honey Hunting is an ancient tradition where Nepal’s honey hunters climb delicate, handwoven ladders that hang from the high cliffs of the Himalayas. The Gurung people have faced this risky journey for centuries, preserving their tradition and sharing remarkable challenges and stories. Each year, we invite a small group of adventurers to join this exclusive expedition, allowing them to experience the stunning views and captivating tales of this timeless honey hunting practice.
Preparations for the Expedition
Mad honey hunting takes place on towering cliffs, a few inches outside the usual comfort zone. As such, there are a few preparations you'll need to make before you begin the expedition. In this elevation range, drink enough water, wear sturdy footwear, and take it one step at a time for an enjoyable journey.
Moderate
Elevation Change
The tour will encompass moderate changes in elevation, ranging from 2000-3500 feet. Prepare yourself for ascending and descending steep paths and trails as you traverse the mountainous landscape of Lamjung. Uphill climbs and downhill descents will exert strain on your muscles and joints, so it’s vital to be mentally and physically prepared for the elevation change.
Carry
a Backpack
You’ll need to carry a backpack weighing 20 to 30 pounds, packed with essential gear for a comfortable trip. Please, be prepared to carry this load while trekking, as the weight will be with you throughout the journey. The weather can change, with cooler temperatures at higher elevations, so pack layers. Also, pack light, bring only essentials, and maintain a steady pace to balance the load and stay comfortable during the climb.
Physical
Fitness
You’ll need a certain level of physical fitness, as the honey hunting day involves walking 3-4 miles (2 to 3 hours) through steep cliffs. It requires a good amount of endurance and stamina for this hunting expedition.
Gear List
Stay comfortable on your honey hunting expedition by choosing the right essentials for your backpack. By using versatile layers that can be easily combined, you can achieve optimal comfort without carrying excessive weight. These layers provide the perfect balance of insulation, ventilation, and weather protection to adapt to changing conditions.
